Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long beach on 24 August 1972. DuVernay was motivated to pursue her love of art by DuVernay's aunt Denise at the age of a small child. Her aunt was a nurse, who worked night shifts so that she could devote her day to theatre and literature as well as art. DuVernay was a fan of the movie West Side Story, which she brought to her. DuVernay recognized that art is a powerful tool to promote social activism. DuVernay had a mother who was aware of her social circle and taught her to make use of the arts as a way of expression. DuVernay was raised in Compton by her parents however, she spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama. This is where the family of DuVernay's father has been for generations. The father of DuVernay's reminiscences recalled the historical civil rights marches through the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the nearby town Selma Alabama. The DuVernay family visited Selma over the summers and was later motivated to make a documentary about the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was awarded her graduation certificate from Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. After graduation, she studied at the University of California Los Angeles and earned degrees both in English and African American study. DuVernay was a college student when she started to get interested in production for the broadcast media. Her career began as an assistant for CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was able to recall being assigned an assignment to watch the house and examining the trash belonging to one of the jury. Her work left her dissatisfied in journalism, so she decided to shift her focus towards the publicity industry. DuVernay began her professional career as a junior publicity assistant in a tiny film studio shortly after she graduated from the college. In 1999, she launched her own company of public relations dubbed The DuVernay Agency. Alongside PR, the agency has also launched lifestyle networks as well as promotions, like Urban Beauty Collective. Urban Beauty Collective.
